Heels Make History

History was made in the college lacrosse world on Memorial Day. Never before had a team with 6 losses won a National Championship. Well no one told the North Carolina Tar Heels that. They shocked the world, and me as well.

Carolina came in as big underdogs against the Maryland Terrapins, who were ranked 1st overall. The Tar Heels didn’t care what their rank was as they came, and conquered the Terps.

A thriller in the city of Brotherly Love, a 14-13 OT victory was what the Heels would need to do it all. Chris Cloutier is a name that sports fan need to recognize. During the championship weekend, Cloutier scored 14 goals, yes you’re reading that right, 14 goals. Joe Breschi has to be the coolest coach on the Earth too. Guy screams awesomeness, I’ve got a lot of respect for that guy.

For the Terps, nothing you can do. A bad penalty late killed them. Their goalie on the other hand may have made the greatest save in sports history. Kyle Bernlohr made an acrobatic save to keep the hope alive, but just couldn’t find the howitzer from Cloutier in the extra time.

I’ve never been a huge lacrosse guy. I played a few years of youth lax, and have been on and off with it. But now after this game, I got to say, I’m becoming a bigger fan. That game showed sports excitement and intensity all in one. Got to say the announcers gave the game some of its best moments. Hats off to the gentlemen, they are champions of their craft.

So next Memorial Day, I will have my eyes glued to the screen. After this exhibition of the sport, I will most definitely be watching the tournament. Don’t blink, you might miss the entire game. I sure know I won’t be.

Onward To Omaha

As the College World Series approaches and I found myself wondering, is it the most underrated thing out there? When you think college playoffs, you think of March Madness and the College Football Playoff. But I will tell you this, this early summer classic, is something else.

The last two seasons, we have seen absolute classics from Vanderbilt and UVA. They split the two series and it has me begging for a third act. While we probably won’t see another series like these two, we have hope for some great games.

The regional last year proved that college baseball is worth watching. These kids play their hearts out from beginning to end. And the moments that you get at the end of them are priceless. Look at Dansby Swanson, he and Vandy win their big game, then boom he’s picked 1st overall. Something you don’t get in any other sport.

The atmosphere is electric. Omaha is the place to be, or at least for this series it is. That stadium has been the home for some the best moments in college baseball.

What I really love is how much these fellas love the game of baseball. Some of the guys are going to graduate, and looking for a job or looking to go pro. Others know that this could be their last hurrah. They are out there for the love of Americas pastime, and that is super commendable.

So if you find yourself with nothing to watch, I implore you to watch these games. They are awesome, you won’t be able to take you eyes off the screen.

Early Heisman Front Runners

When you think of the middle of May and college sports, you think Heisman Trophy right? Well not everyone does, but I got to thinking the other day, and there are four names that come to mind. I know, I know there is plenty of other stuff going on. But with spring games and recruiting at its highest, why not talk a little Heisman.

The obvious front runner is Leonard Fournette out of LSU. I’ll say it, I thought he had this award won by Week 8 last year. But he fell off the face of the earth, kind of like LSU did. Fournette, who is a blue chip running back will surely be the favorite to win this award next season. Rushing for over 1,900 yard last year, I truly believe he eclipses the 2,000 mark this year. He is the number 1 guy on this list.

My favorite is Christian McCaffrey out of Stanford. This kid is the American Pharaoh of the group, just a pure stud. He in my opinion is a lot like Danny Woodhead, but a lot better. He crashed the party late last year, but will, in my opinion, be Fournettes biggest adversary. Easily the best RB in the Pac-12, we could see this guy as the one to defeat Fournette for the big award.

DeShaun Watson had a storybook season last year but just couldn’t get it done. A Heisman, an ACC title and National Title are all within reach next season. But Watson has to improve a lot, especially his attitude. I like this guy and think he will probably go number 1 overall in next years draft. But he has to do something to stand out against the top 2 here.

The last name is Dalvin Cook. Without Cook, Florida State is probably on the outside looking in on the ACC. This kid is a game changer and will be a top rusher next year. Like Watson, he needs to prove himself in the big games, especially non-conference. He’s the one I can see having the free-fall late in the campaign.

I like McCaffrey¬†a lot, but Fournette is a purebred rusher. It’s going to be interesting, and think about this too. There are still names I didn’t even say. Oh yeah and it’s only May. Plenty of time for some resume builders to give some young bucks a shot at that crown. I am chomping at the bit for some college football, good lord I can’t wait.
