The Big, Bad BIG 10 Conference

Cold weather and smash mouth football is brought to you by the teams of this weeks conference. The BIG 10 is a conference that prides itself on two things, a running attack and tough linebackers to stop that run. This conference also gives you final scores such as 7-6 or 10-3, otherwise known as defensive battles. We get the occasional snooze-fest, but this conference is usually one to watch around conference title game time. Last years game was a thriller between Iowa and Michigan State. Let me tell you that game brought us everything and more. So without further adieu, let’s get to the BIG 10.

My favorite in the East division is Ohio State, led by the legendary coach Urban Meyer. Meyer and the Buckeyes were left out of the playoff last year due to a tough loss to Michigan State. They should have handed the ball to Ezekiel Elliot a bit more, but hey don’t tell him I said that, I heard he’s still pretty upset about that. But with J.T. Barrett returning, I really like the Buckeyes to take the East division.

In the West division, I like a team with eyes at the end of their name too, it’s the Iowa Hawkeyes. C.J. Beathard proved he can play with the big boys last season and just came up short in the conference title game. They also have some favorable home games with Michigan, Wisconsin and Nebraska. A little bit of home cooking should aid the Hawkeyes to win the West. They just need to win the games they should win and win them with their defense and quarterback play.

I wrote about Michigan a month or two ago, and I think the Wolverines are a team to most definitely watch heading into this season. I think replacing their starting QB is going to be incredibly tough, but a guy like Coach Harbaugh could do it. That guy is tough as nails and with a team returning a kid named Jake Butt, they should contend. The Buckeyes should be their toughest competition in that division.

Speaking of teams from the state of Michigan, let’s not leave out the Michigan State Spartans. The Sparty’s has been a major contender over the past few seasons. But losing two of their top linemen and their QB will most likely be too much for them. Too much talent lost is easily going to be the killer from the fellas out of East Lansing.

My picks are as follows

  1. Ohio State 11-1 (9-0)
  2. Michigan 10-2 (7-2)
  3. Michigan State 9-3 (7-2)
  4. Indiana 7-5 (5-4)
  5. Penn State 6-6 (3-6)
  6. Maryland 5-7 (2-7)
  7. Rutgers 3-9 (1-8)

  1. Iowa 10-2 (8-1)
  2. Wisconsin 9-3 (7-2)
  3. Nebraska 7-5 (5-4)
  4. Minnesota 7-5 (4-5)
  5. Northwestern 6-6 (3-6)
  6. Illinois 4-8 (2-7)
  7. Purdue 3-9 (1-8)
